Hospital to Launch Cord Blood Donation Program - Date: December 8, 2008

There’s a way your new child can become a lifesaver before he or she is even out of diapers.

On Dec. 1, St. Luke’s Hospital will launch the area’s first public umbilical cord blood donation program.

The blood, which is collected free of charge from mothers who volunteer, is used to treat leukemia, sickle cell anemia and dozens of other diseases.

Cord blood is rich in stem cells and can be used in the same way as stem cells taken from the bone marrow of adult donors.
